If anyone could shed some light on my great grandfather who then transfered to the Somerset Light Infantry and died in April 1918. Any info would be most grateful and why he left the Monmouthshire Regiment, Thanks

Has anyone any knowledge of a bear being 'liberated' %26 dressed in a standard issue greatcoat by the 1st Batt in Northampton in 1914 before they went to France?

In common with many of the battalion, my grandfather told his family very little about the horrors they endured, just that he was in the 2nd Battle of Ypres and was found by a Belgian farmer after the German line advanced after Frezenburg. Thanks to you and your contributors we have been able to piece together his story. Many thanks

Can anyone give me any info about my Great Grandfather? I know that he survived the war but was gassed and served in the Labour Corps afterwards. What was his earlier service number? Was he related to Charles Lambert 2136 who died 23/3/15?
We have his Unit Register Card for the Labour Corps which has a date of joining for immediate service 9/11/14. Surely this is too early and must be joining the Monmouthshire Regiment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whilst researching my family I visited the CWGC website and found W.G. Church as being in the 1st Bn Monmouthshire Reg, and killed at Sequehart 08/10/1918. However his service no is 47300, but your web site has the service numbers as 6 digits. Also he is not on your roll of honour (Noticed that you do admit it is work in progress). Is there any way you could check to see if the CWGC information is correct or was he with another Regiment. Many thanks.

Any information about my great-uncle, Arthur John Pope, would be much appreciated. He was killed in action on 08/05/1915. I was amazed to come across the photo of him and the 'Newport Boys' on this site.

Hi Sally,

The picture you see on the front page of this website is of Rifleman JOHN ALBERT POPE and not your great-uncle. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of him for you. I will check my records and see what I do have on him for you.

I'm researching my Great-Grandfather Walter Edward Green as a few years ago I inherited his medals from another family member. He was a private in the monmouth regiment, his number was 1373 and later 225243. If anyone has any information on him i'd greatly appreciate it!

My great-uncle Stanley Langmaid Rifleman 2321
was taken prisoner and died on 20 July 1915. I would love to know what camp he was held in so I can research this a little further. The notification in the South Wales Argus reads the he died of inflammation of the kidneys but the family were told he died of chickenpox. I would be grateful of any help.

Hi,
We are trying to find out more about my GGrandfather Charles, he died on June 3rd 1917. He was a Lance Corporal and his service number was 225338. We have been to visit his grave in Sans-en-Gohelle and it was a very moving experience.
Because the 1911 census isn't out yet we can't go back any further in our searche, do you know if there are any records still in existance that could provide date of birth, place of birth etc (Kew maybe?). We didn't even know he was in the 1st Batallion Monmouthshire until today. Any guidance you could give would be very gratefully received. Keep up the good work, these men deserve the all the recognition we can give them.

Subject:Can you help?

I am looking for any information about two family members - Sidney Underwood (3884 and 15932) and Hubert Martin Underwood (2958) - who served with the first batallion of the Monmouthshire regiment during WW1. I know that Hubert Martin became a sergeant and saw action in the Battle of Loos, where he died of injuries on 13.10.15. Otherwise, I know little about either man. I would be grateful for any help you can give.
